SAVE MONEY – BUY AN ENERGY EFFICIENT FURNACE

The heat source in most homes continues to be fossil fuels or electricity generated by nuclear and coal fire power plants.  This is both expensive (as fuel costs are on the rise) and detrimental to the environment.  To combat these issues, many people are looking to replace old furnaces with new, energy efficient alternatives.

How do you know when to replace your old furnace with one of the Energy Star variety?  Some obvious answers are the following:

  • Your furnace doesn’t work.
  • Your furnace is more than 15 years old.
  • It is constantly in need of expensive repairs.
  • You want to add on to your home and will need to change things to find a way to heat up the new space.
  • You are looking for ways to save money and have the resources to purchase a more energy efficient and ecologically friendly furnace.

An Energy Star furnace will certainly cut your utility bill, saving you hundreds of dollars or more per year.  It will also improve the air quality in your home.

There are a number of manufacturers who make high efficiency gas and oil (mainly in colder parts of the country) furnaces.  In both furnace types, you should opt for Energy Star qualified models.  Gas furnace efficiencies are listed as AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) and fun from 83% to 97%.  Most Energy Star oil furnaces show efficiencies in the 83% to 86% range, with condensing oil furnaces at up to 95%.  These statistics are great considering older furnaces tend to be 50% to 60% efficient.

When buying a new furnace, make sure it’s properly sized for your home.  Contractors tend to choose oversized furnaces, which results in a less-efficient system.

If and when you do purchase an Energy Star furnace, have it professionally installed.  The old equipment will have to be removed with much care, especially if asbestos is in the picture.  In addition, installation may require a new flue and air intake and electrical and gas service will need to be temporarily disconnected.  These steps require skill and should be performed by someone who knows what he or she is doing.
