Choosing a Natural Pet Food for Your Dog

The ingredients in most commercial pet food brands are questionable to say the least.  I just got a new puppy (Cricket) and want her to live a long and healthy life.  I feel the food I choose for her is of utmost importance in making this happen so I’m out doing my research. I’ve already found that there are so many choices of pet foods out there, and opinions of dog nutrition vary among veterinarians, breeders, pet owners and the like.  Because the so called experts don’t agree on what’s best, I figured I’d share a summary of the rules I’m following.

My #1 rule is this:  If it’s not healthy enough for you to eat, don’t feed it to your loyal pooch. The less animal fat, sodium and sugar in the food, the better.

A healthy dog’s diet should contain 40% meat, 50% vegetables and 10% grains.  It’s important to find a pet food that closely follows these ratios.  I’d love to make Cricket a vegetarian like myself, but dogs are omnivores.  They thrive on consuming animal protein, so this dog will be eating meat.

In terms of meat, make sure that meat protein sources are high on the ingredient list of the food you choose.  Examples of this would be chicken meal, lamb meal and venison meal.  You’d obviously rather have these meats in the food vs. animal by-products like chicken beaks, bones, etc.  Low quality foods tend to list a meat source first, followed by by-products and fillers. Beware of this.

The best grains for dogs are rolled oats, quinoa, brown rice and barley.  It’s better to have these ingredients in the food as opposed to corn, cornmeal and wheat.

Even though preservatives may be in your pet’s food to keep it edible, don’t choose foods that contain cancer causing agents.  Examples of this would be BHA, BHT and Ethoxyquin.  More health conscious foods contain preservatives like Vitamin C and E.

To ensure your dog is eating a healthy and balanced diet, why not go 100% natural?  That’s what I’ve decided to do.  I want Cricket to eat a nutritious and holistic diet.  The food I’ve chosen for her is made by Natura Pet Products.  The Company’s mission is to produce pet foods with the healthiest ingredients available.  They use high quality, whole food ingredients that offer optimal nutrition to benefit pets’ overall health without unnecessary additives.  The specific Natura brand I have chosen is called Innova and was highly recommended by my brother and sister-in-law, who feed it to their 2 lab puppies.

Innova is made with farm-fresh, all-natural ingredients from the 5 food groups.  The food provides optimal nutrition for peak performance at every stage of the pet’s life.  Cricket loves it and so far I’m really happy with it!!!  To find out where to buy it go here.
