The Benefits of Organic Shampoos and Conditioners
Traditional shampoos and conditioners are full of harmful synthetic chemicals that are known irritants, allergins or carcinogens. In fact, personal care products are among the least regulated consumer goods sold in the U.S. As the skin, scalp and hair absorb toxins with ease, the long term effects of exposure to these toxins is of much concern.
When reading a label, know that the ingredients are listed in the order of most to least. Here are some ingredients you should actively avoid:
- Sodium Lauryl Sulfate – This is commonly used in most store bought shampoos and conditioners. It is known to cause cataracts in adults and improper eye development in children. It is also a potential cause of endocrine disruption.
- Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate – This molecule is known to cause eye and skin irritations.
- Derivatives of Lauryl Alcohol
- Mureth Sulfate
- Propylene Glycol (i.e. anti-freeze) – As you can imagine, this one is not recommended for the skin or scalp.
- Olefin Sulfonate
- Parabens (Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Ethylparaben) – These are preservatives and potential carcinogens.
- Phthalates (i.e. fragrance) – These chemicals not only impact the reproductive system, but are also immune system toxicants.
- Ethanolamines – These are likely toxic foaming agents that are easily absorbed by the skin. They can cause liver and kidney damage.
Naturally, it makes sense that we seek out organic shampoos that are free of these common toxins. Reading labels is the key to finding the best shampoo for you. To narrow your choices, you can start with shampoos that are best for your hair type. Natural shampoos and conditioners should be free of synthetic fragrances, artificial coloring, phthalates and preservatives.
A couple of brands that I personally like are Red Flower, Intelligent Nutrients and David Babaii for Wildaid. I leave the product in my hair for at least a minute, as the cleaning elements in the shampoos are gentler so take a tad longer to be absorbed.
Organic or natural shampoo and conditioning products offer immense benefits to both your hair and scalp. Why not go green and revive your hair from years of brutal treatment from traditional store bought products?
