12 Ways to Have a GREEN Thanksgiving
With Thanksgiving festivities right around the corner, 2009 is the year to make it a more earth friendly holiday. Here are 12 helpful hints to head in that direction:
- As Thanksgiving is one of the busiest travel weekends of the year by both plane and car, why not celebrate at home in 2009? Limit your carbon footprint and avoid the stressful holiday travel.
- If you do have to travel, carpool.
- Keep the décor simple. Rather than using plastic and paper based items, collect Fall leaves, pine cones and twigs from your yard. Choose organic flowers and natural, soy candles for your centerpiece.
- If you really want to be daring, omit the turkey and opt for a vegetarian or vegan meal. That’s easy for me to say, given I don’t eat meat. Therefore, I give you option B which is to buy a USDA-Certified organic and free-range turkey. If you go that route, your bird will have been raised using humane treatment standards and without antibiotics, growth hormones and feed made from animal byproducts.
- Go organic. Shop for all your organic produce and fruit at your local Farmer’s Market or grocery store. You can also use organic milk, butter, cheese, yogurt, sour cream etc.
- Use reusable shopping bags when you do your food shopping to reduce the amount of plastic and paper waste.
- Use natural sweeteners such as honey or syrup instead of sugar.
- Benefit both the environment and your taste buds by choosing an organic or biodynamic wine with the meal.
- Reduce the amount of waste you utilize by not going overboard while shopping. Only buy what you need and choose products that come in packaging that can actually be recycled.
- Donate your leftovers. If you end up with more food than you can handle, find a local food kitchen or shelter that will gladly take your extras.
- Recycle the glass, cans, plastic and paper that is used to cook the Thanksgiving feast. You can even compost the food scraps.
- When it comes time to load up the dishwasher, use environmentally friendly dishwashing detergent that contains no chemicals or toxins (try Wave or Seventh Generation).

How long has this blog been around? I have been searching for this kind of information for the past week and a half.
I don’t usually post on blogs but had to on yours. You have a very distinctive writing style. A lot of people don’t have that touch, they just drone on and on in the most boring way. But not you – thanks! I love visiting other sites about raising a baby! It seems like there is always something to learn about it. I don’t have time to read all of it right now, I found this site while I was trying to find something else on ask.com, but I’ve bookmarked your homepage and will check back again soon to see what’s new. Click here if you’d like to check out my site. Thank you again for having this blog. Very informative!
Hi, the site is brand new and I’m learning as I go, thus the reason I didn’t see anyone’s comments until a week after I got them!!! Good thing is I now know where to look.
